Mozambique’s trade with other African countries, over the last five years, reached 7.1 billion us dollars, representing a 66 per cent increase in exports.
The data was announced on Saturday by Prime Minister Benvinda Levi in the central city of Beira, during the official launch of Mozambique’s commercial transactions within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Levi explained that AfCFTA should be seen by the national private sector as a catalysing platform for establishing strategic partnerships and boosting economic and business activities.
“We chose the city of Beira to host this event because it is a truly integrated, regional and global logistics platform for facilitating trade with the countries of the hinterland, and through them, with other countries on the continent and around the world”, she said.

The Prime Minister believes that the private sector “has the potential to contribute to increasing our current level of trade with the rest of the African continent, which is currently only two per cent of Mozambique’s total trade.”
Therefore, she added, more businesses must invest in networked industrial development and infrastructures in order to support the rapid growth of production within the framework of the “Industrialize Mozambique” programme, “which will boost more opportunities for increased exports.”
The Prime Minister also challenged businesses “to exploit the potential of our logistics corridors in the centre, north and south of the country, as they are international logistics platforms that allow connections to national, regional, continental and global markets”.
The country joined the AfCFTA agreement in 2018 and submitted its tariff offer last year, which was approved in February by the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, creating the conditions for Mozambique to start trading with the 47 African countries that are part of the initiative.
“This is one of the first steps towards materializing the promise made by President Chapo, when he was inaugurated, to strengthen Mozambique’s strategic commercial position in the regional and global markets, to maximize and diversify the export base, aiming at the structural transformation of our economy”, she said.
