The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, has promised to rehabilitate the Dona Ana railway bridge over the Zambezi river, between Mutarara, in Tete province, and Caia, in Sofala.
As a pedestrian crossing, the bridge is in an advanced state of degradation, so much as to put people’s lives at risk.
The infrastructure is critical for the population of Mutarara, providing access to the neighbouring province, where they buy essential products or provide services. These residents live some 290 kilometres by dirt road from the provincial capital of Tete.
People are reported to have fallen to their deaths in the river as a result of the state of the bridge, to the consternation of the surviving inhabitants of the two districts.
