Brazil’s Hugo Calderano made history on Sunday by becoming the first player from outside China or Europe to win the International Table Tennis Federation World Cup, defeating the world’s top-ranked player in the final.
Backed by the crowd in Macau, China’s Lin Shidong started strong, taking the first game 11-6.
However, Calderano, currently ranked fifth in the world, quickly turned the match around, overpowering the 20-year-old Chinese rising star by winning the next four games 11-7, 11-9, 11-4, and 11-5, sealing victory in just 42 minutes.
The 28-year-old Brazilian is the first non-Chinese player to win the World Cup since Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov claimed the title in 2017.
Before defeating the world number one, Calderano had already bested the second seed—world and Olympic champion Wang Chuqin—in the semi-finals, and the third-ranked player, Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto, in the quarter-finals.
The women’s competition unfolded as expected, with world champion and top-ranked Sun Yingsha defeating fellow Chinese player Kuai Man, ranked seventh, in straight games (11-9, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6).
Portugal’s Jieni Shao, currently ranked 52nd in the world, also competed but was eliminated in the group stage after a draw and a loss—the latter against China’s Wang Yidi, ranked third globally.
The tournament was held in Macau for the second consecutive year, following a four-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event awarded a total prize pool of US$1 million.
The vent was organised by the Sports Bureau, Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) and World Table Tennis Management Group Limited (WTMG), and co-organised by the Macau Table Tennis General Association,
