A ship loaded with coal, which had recently left Nacala port in Nampula, northern Mozambican, caught fire on Sunday afternoon, causing four minor injuries, an official source said today.
“It is assumed that there was an explosion in the engine room [of the ship], a fact that has yet to be ascertained,” a note from the Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority (Itransmar), sent to Lusa explains.
The incident, which involved a MV/ALTZEK model ship used for transporting dry bulk cargoes bound for Poland, caused four minor injuries.
“The four crew members (…) are out of danger and are currently undergoing treatment at a clinic in Nacala,” the press release added.
According to Itransmar, a team of naval engineers will carry out a technical assessment of the Liberian ship to determine whether it can continue its the journey.
Meanwhile, information gathered by Jornal Domingo from the Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority (ITRANSMAR) Delegation in Nacala, Nampula province, indicates that the ship left the port yesterday afternoon.
Four tugboats with fire-fighting equipment from CFM-Logistic and Corredor Logístico Norte were mobilized to the site, but the fire had already been extinguished by the ship’s crew.
