MDM leader Lutero Simango says he is concerned about the recent attack on vehicles in the province of Sofala and warns of the risk of the country’s division.
“That situation cannot be ignored. We have to look very carefully and understand the signs (…), we run the risk of waking up one day with the country completely divided, and we are not in favour of the division of the country,” Simango said in statements to journalists.
The incident in question, which passed off without injury, occurred when six men intercepted two trucks, setting them on fire, resulting in the burning of a total of seven vehicles in Maringue, Sofala province, an area of historic clashes with the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO).
For the MDM leader, the solution to the problem lies in inclusive and objective political dialogue. “Therefore, we hope that the inclusive political dialogue will be very serious, very objective and will have to resolve these problems”, he said.
On April 2, the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique unanimously and definitively approved the law on the political agreement to pacify the country, which provides for the review of the Constitution and the powers of the President.
Simango reiterated his willingness to actively contribute to the political dialogue and appealed to the seriousness of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the ruling party, in bringing pacification to the country.
“Frelimo must assume its responsibilities and take this process very seriously,” he added.
Police are investigating
The Mozambican police said on Wednesday that machetes and a machine gun were used in the attack on the vehicles in Maringue, but the perpetrators remain unidentified.
“All operational developments and steps are being taken to hold the perpetrators of this crime accountable,” said Leonel Muchina, spokesman for the general command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, at a press conference in Maputo.
Some details of this attack had already been given on Tuesday by the provincial commander of the PRM in Sofala. When questioned by journalists, the provincial commander of the PRM said that it was “premature” to attribute the attack to armed Renamo members, promising to make further statements after the investigation.
