President Daniel Chapo this Thursday held a meeting with the Minister of Defence of Tanzania, Stergomena Lawrence Tax, who is visiting Mozambique on behalf of Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan Suluhu. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on areas such as peace, security, economic and social development.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Stergomena Tax highlighted the symbolism of her mission, which results from a direct mandate from the Tanzanian head of state.
“I am very pleased to be in Mozambique. I came here sent by my president, Dr. Samia Hassan Suluhu, to convey our determination to continue working with President Chapo to strengthen cooperation between our two countries,” she said.
The Minister stressed that Tanzania and Mozambique share deep historical ties, forged in contexts of common struggle and solidarity.
“We have a brotherhood that goes back many years. It is this historical basis that continues to guide our current efforts to consolidate a strong and sustainable partnership,” she said.
During her stay, the Tanzanian minister also held a working meeting with Mozambican Minister of Defence Cristovao Chume, with whom she discussed bilateral cooperation in the sector.
“We exchanged information and ideas, and reaffirmed our mutual commitment to continue working side by side in the interests of our peoples,” she said about the meeting with Minister Chume.
According to the Tanzanian minister, new areas with potential for cooperation have been identified, including sectors that require urgent joint responses.
“We are prepared to expand our collaboration in priority areas, and ensure that together we contribute to the well-being of our peoples, ensuring stability, peace and prosperity,” she said.
Stergomena Tax described both President Chapo and President Suluhu as being committed to transforming shared challenges into opportunities for regional growth.
“Our leaders are determined to promote concrete actions that promote development, security and economic stability in our countries,” she added.
The visit by the Tanzanian minister takes place in a context of growing security challenges in the Southern African region, and demonstrates the importance of defence diplomacy and strategic coordination between neighbouring countries. Mozambique and Tanzania have been actively collaborating on regional initiatives within the framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It further reinforces the political alignment between the two countries and reaffirms the role of Mozambique and Tanzania as key partners in building a peaceful, resilient and prosperous Southern Africa.
