The Mozambican Police claim that they do not know the motives that led unidentified assailants to ambush and destroy seven trucks on Tuesday in Maringue district, in the central province of Sofala.
According to eye-witnesses, the attacking group consisted of eight people, one of whom was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. The others carried no firearms and were armed with machetes.
“The individuals are still at large and their motives for the crime are still unknown”, said the Maputo city police spokesperson Leonel Muchina, speaking to reporters on Wednesday. He claimed the police are using all available mechanisms to track down the criminals.
“Faced with this situation, all operational resources are being deployed, leading to the identification, neutralization and accountability of the perpetrators of this crime”, he said.

The ambush took place on the stretch of the main north-south highway (ENI), at Nhamapadza in Maringue district. During the war of destabilisation, a base of the apartheid-backed Renamo rebels was located nearby.
However, following the 2019 peace agreement signed between the then President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade, the Renamo militia has been demobilised under the DDR (Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration) programme.
Nonetheless, it remains possible that disgruntled former Renamo guerrillas staged the Tuesday ambush in an attempt to extract more benefits from the government.
