Mobility of people and goods in some neighbourhoods of Tete city is being compromised by the degradation and collapse of small bridges [‘pontecas’]. Users of the affected infrastructure are calling for immediate intervention by the municipal authorities.
In total, there are three neighbourhoods with restricted mobility: Francisco Manyanga, Mateus Sansão, Muthemba and Matundo
The ‘pontecas’ exhibit exposed bridge-armour and corroded decks, and circulation of vehicles and motorbikes on them is restricted, with drivers being forced to use alternative routes.
One of the most critical points is the access to the largest informal market in Tete city, the Kwachena. The ‘ponteca’ there collapsed at the end of January this year.
The mayor of Tete, Cesar de Carvalho, explains that the degradation of the bridges is the result of low rainfall, and has pledged to rehabilitate all damaged infrastructure by the middle of this year.
De Carvalho was speaking on Monday after a ceremony commemorating Mozambican Women’s Day, attended by members of the provincial government, the OMM, civil society, religious figures and others.
