The main opposition parities have called on the Mozambican government to stop promoting “failed dialogues”.
Speaking on Monday at a ceremony in Nangade, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where President Daniel Chapo lit “the flame of national unity”, which will be carried from Nangade to Machava Stadium in Maputo, where it will arrive on 25 June, the 50th anniversary of Mozambican independence, Alberto Ferreira, of the main parliamentary opposition party, Podemos, said that the political dialogue currently under way must restore trust in political institutions.
According to Ferreira – who was speaking on behalf not only of Podemos, but also of the two other parliamentary opposition parties, Renamo, and the MDM – there have been enough “failed agreements” in the country.
“There is a lack of credibility and integrity of Mozambican elections, reduced confidence in political institutions, economic and social discontent in various sectors of the public administration and of society. There is a high cost of living, unemployment, lack of housing, dissatisfaction with the national health and education systems, corruption, dissatisfaction with the quality of services provided by public institutions”, he claimed.
Therefore, “the political dialogue must address and bring solutions for the most pertinent problems of Mozambican society”, said Ferreira.
He believed that “the flame of national unity” must bring together Mozambican society, which despite differences of a political, religious, racial or ethnic nature and the problems mentioned above, must stand together as one, “with the firm will of a people determined to follow and respond to the new and ever-present demands of our Mozambican society.”
“That’s why, as a people united in diversity, we need to put an end to the constant instability and crises, especially election crises. We need to prevent further material and human damage from being caused in the future. We need to restore peace, tranquility and consolidate the rule of law”, Ferreira added.
