A Mozambique Airlines (LAM) aircraft had to return to Maputo airport on Saturday after a bird strike caused damage to the aircraft, the second such incident in just over a week.
In a statement, LAM said that the incident occurred on Saturday (March 29), in Inhambane, when “birds collided with the aircraft” after take-off and “caused damage to one of the sensors”.
“Due to the incident, the aircraft, which was to continue its operation from Inhambane to Quelimane and later to Beira and Maputo, had to return immediately to the country’s capital, where the company’s operational base is located,” LAM explains.
LAM added that the landing at Maputo International Airport “was successful, without the need for special assistance, neither for passengers nor crew”. The aircraft was then the subject of technical assistance and returned to service.
On Friday 21 March, another LAM aircraft had to return to Maputo airport after a collision with a “flock of birds” caused damage to one of the engines, forcing flights to be rescheduled.
LAM issued a statement at the time, reporting that the incident involved the aircraft operating the Maputo-Nampula flight and took place shortly after the plane’s departure from Maputo airport.
