Farmers who live near Gorongosa National Park are hardworking, smart and resilient. With very little technology, they grow maize, sorghum, sesame, vegetables, fruits, and tree crops such as cashew. They feed their families and cover household needs.
At Gorongosa Park, we support them with tools and training and sometimes better seeds. But all the credit of their success goes to them. As they continue each year to increase yields, they will lift themselves out of poverty.
However, this year the rains came late, and crops did not grow. This created food insecurity. Therefore, the Gorongosa Project is implementing a food distribution program with a supplemental grant from the Greg Carr Foundation.
The Program will support a total of 3,500 families.
We are providing a food kit to each family comprised of this:
Maize Meal – 25 Kg
Mariana rice – 25 Kg
Beans – 5 Kg 7. Soap – 2 bars
Cooking oil – 2 liters
Salt – 1Kg
Dry fish – 2 Kg
Soap – 2 bars
Milk powder
Gorongosa Project teammate Gabriela Curtiz is leading this effort. She is coordinating with the local government.
The good news is that the rains did finally start, and the families should have a chance for a crop later this year.
On any given year there can be a short-term crisis. The long-term solution is that these households will be able to develop reserves of food and money. Some might be able to implement irrigation someday to correct for unpredictable rainfall.
We believe in them, our neighbours!
