The gospel of violence and hatred must be replaced by messages of love for one’s neighbour, urged Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, at a rally on Friday in the northern city of Nampula.
He repeatedly urged national unity, peace and forgiveness so that stability may rule in Mozambique.
“All religions preach love”, said Chapo. “We shall work closely with the people for the consolidation of peace and reconciliation. We shall do everything to stabilise the country and end violent demonstrations”.
The President centred his hour long speech on the need to promote peace and security, as key elements for development. “Politicians should preach love, forgiveness and reconciliation among Mozambique. Only thus will we achieve peace”, he said.
Chapo explained to the crowd the essence of the political undertaking he had signed in Maputo with nine political parties on 5 March. “The signing of this undertaking is not the end”, he said. “On the contrary, it’s the beginning and everyone should participate in it. The media, business people, academics, we must all sit down to discuss what has been going on with us over the past 30 years. For whenever elections are held, there are always problems. Let’s debate the deep causes of this problem”.
Chapo stressed that differences of opinion cannot justify violence. “Thinking differently is good”, he said, “but it cannot lead us to violence that generates violence, hatred that generates hatred. The law of life is that we reap what we sow, and so all Mozambicans should plant love”.
Chapo stressed the need for Mozambique to gain economic independence, so that the country no longer depends on foreign aid.
“Independence will only be complete when we do not need to depend on others”, he said. “That’s why we say let’ work, let’s produce in industry, and even for export”.
Chapo evoked the 50th anniversary of Mozambican independence, which is celebrated this year, stressed that “the festivities of the 50 years should take place in an environment of peace and harmony and never in division”.
