Mozambique Elections: About 1,800 health centres affected by post-election violence

The new Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations, Domingos Estêvão Fernandes, on Monday (24 March 2025 ) presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Domingos Estevão Fernandes praised the support that the United Nations has provided to Mozambique, especially in efforts to stabilize the country, combat terrorism and provide humanitarian assistance.
The ambassador was speaking in New York, after presenting the Letters accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Mozambique to the United Nations, to the Secretary General of the organization, António Guterres.
At the event, Domingos Fernandes highlighted the importance that Mozambique attributes to the UN, not only as the epicentre of global multilateralism, but also as a strategic partner in the country’s development process.
In turn, Secretary-General António Guterres praised Mozambique for its “exemplary performance” during its mandate as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, 2023-2024, highlighting the country’s contribution to bringing together actors with opposing positions and to promoting international peace and security. He assured that the global organization will remain committed to mobilizing the international community to support Mozambique in combating terrorism and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Domingos Estevão Fernandes has served as Mozambique’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a role he assumed in 2022. From 2015 to 2022, he was both his country’s High Commissioner to Botswana and Permanent Representative to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
He also was his country’s Ambassador to Angola from 2011 to 2015, and to São Tomé and Principe – as well as Gabon – from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, he was Director for Regional and Continental Integration from 2005 to 2011 and Director for Africa and the Middle East from 2009 to 2010, both in Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
His other positions include Chairperson of the SADC Committees of Senior Officials for Inter-State Politics and Diplomacy and for Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation from 2009 to 2010. He also served as Deputy Director of the Directorate for Economic and Multilateral Relations at Mozambique’s Foreign Ministry from 2001 to 2005.
Domingos Estevão Fernandes holds degrees in development studies and international relations and diplomacy, and is fluent in Portuguese, English and French.
