The chairperson of the Mozambican Association of Fuel Retailers (ARCOMOC), Nelson Mavimbe, believes that, if there is consensus in subsequent meetings between President Daniel Chapo and the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, companies operating in the country will have the opportunity to introduce new investments in a safe environment.
According to Mavimbe – who was speaking on Wednesday, in Maputo, at a business meeting organized by the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce (CCM) – last Sunday’s meeting between Mondlane and Chapo will bring results that end the current post-election political tension.
“Consensus will boost reinvestment and new investments, which will allow companies that were about to shut down their operations in the country to reemerge with some security”, he claimed.
According to Mavimbe, at least 30 fuel stations were vandalized across the country during post-election protests, causing losses of 195.7 million meticais (3.1 million dollars at the current exchange rate). As a result of the crisis in the fuel sector, 400 people lost their jobs.
“We received the meeting between the parties with great satisfaction. We hope that more meetings may bring results and that we can get out of this political tension in which we find ourselves so that the business environment can flow with some efficiency. We hope that consensus can be found as soon as possible to put an end to this tension”, he said.
At the same ceremony, Álvaro Massingue, chairperson of the CCM, announced his candidacy for the presidency of the country’s Confederation of Business Associations (CTA).
He claimed that his candidacy “reflects my commitment to innovative, participatory leadership, focused on concrete results and building a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable business environment.”
“Years of dedication to the association have allowed me to build solid relations with various partners and receive the support and motivation needed to move forward with this candidacy. That’s why I am reaffirming my commitment here today and announcing that I will formally present my candidacy for the CTA elections, the date of which will be announced shortly”, he said.
This is not the first time that Massingue has run for the presidency of the CTA. In 2020, he was defeated by Agostinho Vuma, who is the current leader of the organization.
