The Mozambican government has announced the closure of 34 of the 71 accommodation centres that had been set up in order to shelter the victims of Cyclone Jude, which a fortnight ago hit northern Mozambique, especially Nampula province.
According to Inocêncio Impissa, government spokesperson and Minister of State Administration, speaking to reporters on Tuesday after a meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), held in the northern city of Lichinga, the centres were shut down because the people who were there had received the necessary assistance.
“Our role has been to provide essential goods, to provide assistance in terms of accommodation, to provide hot food and to provide kits for the first few weeks so that the cyclone victims can then re-establish themselves and feed themselves”, he said.
He explained that the government provided initial health care “as well as basic necessities and dignity kits, particularly for girls and women.”
The known death toll from Jude stands at 14, and a further 60 people were injured. Most of the deaths and injuries were caused by flimsy houses collapsing on their occupants, lightning strikes and drowning.
The cyclone destroyed 7,041 houses and damaged a further 13,139.
