A group of Islamist terrorists attacked on Saturday a truck, which was traveling from Pemba city to Mueda district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, causing the death of one person.
The victim was hit by several bullets fired by terrorists along National Road 380 (N380), specifically on the stretch between the Fifth Congress village and the headquarters of the Chai administrative post, in the district of Macomia.
According to eyewitnesses, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the terrorists then fled when Rwandan soldiers, who have been supporting the Mozambican forces, approached to respond to the attack.
“A truck carrying cement bound for the town of Mueda was attacked in Chai. Other occupants, namely the driver and his assistant, were also hit by bullets and are in Pemba hospital, after being rescued by the Rwandan force”, a source said.
According to reports, the dead man was a member of the peasant militia, usually referred to as “local forces”.
Last Wednesday, a group of terrorists captured two fishing boats near Tambuzi Island, in the district of Mocímboa da Praia.
According to sources cited by “Carta de Mocambique”, the first boat, with around 40 fishermen, was captured during Wednesday night and released the following day, after a ransom was paid.
The unspecified ransom was transferred via mobile wallet by the boat’s owner. “The same scenario was repeated on Thursday night, when another group of fishermen ventured out to sea in the dead of night”, a source said.
The situation has caused fear and, since Friday night, some fishermen have stopped going out to sea for fear that they too will be targeted.
