A member of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR – the Mozambican riot police) was one of three people sentenced in March to 30 year prison terms for their involvement in kidnapping.
According to a report by the independent television station STV, this kidnapping departed from the usual pattern, in that the victim was not a businessman, but a lottery winner.
In November 2023, the victim, Alan Boene, and his cousin won 4.58 million meticais (about 72,000 US dollars) on the lottery.
The UIR agent, Eurico Tembe, and two associates, Gilberto Mandlate, and Sergio Bambo, abducted Boene, and demanded that he hand over his winnings in exchange for his freedom.
But, instead of becoming rich, the three fell into the hands of the police (although the report does not say exactly how they were caught).
The Maputo court sentenced each of them to 30 years imprisonment, and compensation to the victim of 1.7 million meticais. In addition, the court declared that the vehicle used in the abduction, and the house owned by Tembe are forfeit to the state.
The defence lawyers have promised to appeal.
