Authorities in Malawi’s department of refugees say they have finalized voluntary repatriation of Mozambican asylum seekers who were living in various settlement camps in the neighbouring country, Capital FM Malawi reported
Senior Administrative and Operations Officer in the department Hilda Katema Kausiwa said together with Mozambican authorities they have jointly voluntarily repatriated 6382 asylum seekers back to their country of origin.

However Kausiwa was quick to disclose that through head count, at least 200 Mozambican households have shown no interest to return to their home country and that after thorough verification, they will be transferred to Dzaleka Refugees Settlement Camp in Dowa.
She has since appealed for continued humanitarian support to the externally displaced persons until the time they return to their country.
Malawi started receiving Mozambican asylum seekers towards the end of the 2024 following disputed presidential election results that saw the governing FRELIMO candidate Daniel Chapo being declared the winner.
