The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged Gloria Nobre Chire, the treasurer of former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, with crimes against state security and criminal conspiracy.
Cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Mediafax”, Chire’s lawyer, Mutota Escova, confirmed the charges against his client.
Chire was detained at her home in the inner Maputo neighbourhood of Alto Mae on Wednesday and was illegally held for 48 hours at the police station in Maputo port where she was denied any contact with her family.
Three lawyers tried to contact her, but the police, in flagrant violation of the law, refused to allow her to speak to them. Only on Friday morning did her family and Mutota manage to speak to Chire, thanks to intervention by the Mozambican Bar Association.
Mutota told reporters that the detention was illegal. The arrest warrant he was shown is dated from late February, and had never been presented to Chire.
“There’s a warrant from February and it’s strange that only now have they decided to execute this warrant”, said Mutota. “The arrest is beyond comprehension. The behaviour of the police is entirely illegal”.
To ensure legal advice for Chire, the OAM went to the Attorney-General’s Offic (PGR). According to the OAM chairperson Carlos Martins, after this approach the PGR ensured that lawyers and family members could have access to Chire.
Mondlane says that Chire is now “a political prisoner” who is suffering “political harassment”.
The police and prosecution attorneys have so far given no details of the “security offences” she is supposed to have committed.
