Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that provide various services to the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) have invoiced around US$57 million for the provision of transport and logistics, cargo handling, catering, stevedoring and cleaning services in recent years.
Speaking at the Transformation, Growth and Control Banking Forum in Maputo, Executive Director of MPDC Ozório Lucas said the amount was paid to a group of companies that provide outsourced services and enjoy stable income and long-term contracts with the Port of Maputo.
He also highlighted that the greatest growth was recorded by companies providing services such as stevedoring and transport of workers and cargo, including on external routes, “without which the port cannot survive”.
Lucas pointed out that the challenge principally lay in finding commercial financing for companies with greater social impact at affordable rates, as these “touch people directly. Banking must reinvent itself to grow in a way that positively supports the country’s development in the current scenario,” he stressed.
