Last year, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) recorded losses of over 28 million meticais as a result of theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure in the country.
The information was provided yesterday by EDM’s national supervisor of Electrical Infrastructure, Meque Licenga, upon the return of more than six tons of copper seized in Tchumene, a municipality in Matola, material that was destined for neighboring South Africa.
According to Licenga, the seized cables are the result of systematic thefts that compromise the energy supply and cause losses to the company and consumers, mainly in Maputo province and the center of the country.
“These cables were removed from transformer stations and distribution lines, directly affecting thousands of customers. The vandalism of electrical infrastructure continues to be a major challenge for the company,” he said.
Licenga said that the company has invested in preventive measures to reduce the losses caused by this crime, which peaked at 260 million meticais in 2021.
“Despite the reduction in losses, we remain vigilant to prevent new cases. Therefore, we have been working to raise awareness in communities, strengthen security and work more closely with the police authorities,” he added. The supervisor called on the public to collaborate in reporting cases of theft and vandalism, warning of the negative impact of this practice on the energy supply. EDM reiterates its commitment to continue implementing actions to protect electrical infrastructures.
