Teachers and healthcare sector staff are already receiving the first tranche of the back-pay to which they are entitled, government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa has said. Impissa however admits that the process faces some constraints resulting from local level managers not acting in accordance with the executive’s expectations. There was therefore a need to clarify certain aspects.
The government statement comes just a few days after healthcare professionals threatened to go on strike again at the end of this month, demanding, among other things, the payment of overtime.
“The payment of overtime has already begun and there is work being done, which is a little more complex, because we have realised that in the process, managers in some parts of the country are not [acting] in accordance with the government’s expectations,” Impissa said on Tuesday at the end of the cabinet meeting.
He explained that there is a need to continue talking to managers, who are actually responsible for distributing the payments to teachers, health personnel and employees in general, about how the payment should be made.
“Because we are paying in phases, it is expected that the payment will be made proportionally according to what each person is entitled to. This is the mechanism that is being adopted,” he highlighted.
Impissa, who is also the Minister of State Administration and Civil Service, reiterated that, in some areas, there are issues that need to be improved to allow everyone, even if only in the form of a signal, to understand that overtime is being paid.
Regarding debts with state suppliers, Impissa noted that the settlement of accounts began last week in a phased regularization, as had been announced. “The suppliers are already being paid and others are being contacted from the provinces, because the contracts there are made at local level,” Impissa stressed.
