Four million US dollars (more than 255.6 million meticais) is the estimated cost to rehabilitate or rebuild eight court buildings erected under the presidential initiative “One District, One Decent Court”, and which were vandalized in the context of the violent demonstrations.
According to information provided by the president of the Supreme Court, Adelino Muchanga, specialized teams remain on the ground assessing the damage caused to 19 affected facilities across the country.
So far, it is known that the restoration of the eight newly constructed buildings will cost around $500,000 each.
“So if we do the math, looking at that number, we’re talking about a four million dollar loss. Some buildings are recoverable, but others will require major intervention. Many of them were vandalized or completely destroyed, especially in the provinces of Zambezia and Nampula. In Maputo province, we had the Infulene court that suffered damage that can be repaired, the same happening with the KaMaxakeni court, in Maputo city,” said Muchanga.
However, with regard to the affected processes, he explained that the exact number of destroyed files, but also those from the colonial era, is being assessed.
“The physical count is still being carried out to understand the true extent of the losses, but we are also in the process of reforming the records. Citizens who had their cases destroyed in the courts are requesting that they be reformed, which seems like a huge exercise in reconstruction,” he explained, suggesting difficulties in rebuilding all the cases.
The court buildings destroyed in the context of the post-election demonstrations are in KaMaxakeni and KaMubukwana (Maputo city); Infulene and Manhiça (Maputo province); Chibuto (Gaza); province of Manica (Manica); Lugela, Mocubela, Inhassunge, Morrumbala, Namacurra, Ile and Pebane (Zambezia); Larde, Namapa, Liupo, Mongincual and Lalaua (Nampula).
