In response to reports of its degradation, the National Roads Administration (ANE) says it is already working on the KM 15 to Matola Gare road in Matola municipality, and explains that work only stopped due to the protests and that the project, covering a total of 20 kilometres of roadway, would be completed by November of this year.
The comments were delivered after an STV report on the difficulties that drivers face on the road between KM 15 in Machava and Matola-Gare. The ANE in response explained that the last intervention took place six years ago, but the road deteriorated in a short time.
“It was, I think, less than six years ago when we carried out the last intervention on that road. It degraded prematurely due to the presence of water. We have a very high water table in that area and we didn’t have gutters to provide the proper drainage,” ANE delegate in Maputo province Dady Novelo acknowledged, admitting that the current state of the road was damaging vehicles.
But maintenance work is already underway, covering the entire length of Avenida Josina Machel, a stretch of approximately 20 km. “Samora Machel Avenue starts at Coca-Cola and goes all the way to Matola Gare and we have two teams doing the work. Two main activities take place on the road, which are the drainage activities, which we are doing – the lined ditches – and the lining of the platform itself,” Novelo explained. “We will have works completed by November, 2025.”
After this intervention, the road will last at least five years without deteriorating. “This coating activity consists of filling holes in the most critical sections. We are replacing the floor structure from the base to subsequent sealing,” Novelo said, underscoring the durability of the repairs.
The work, valued at 64 million meticais, could be completed by November of this year.
