The Mozambique Road Network Company (Revimo), which operates several of the country’s major roads, has announced the suspension of over 300 workers from the tollgates destroyed by rioters, during the post-election tension, characterized by looting and destruction of public and private infrastructures.
Mass demonstrations, called by the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in order to protest against the fraudulent results of the general elections held last October, began peacefully but then degenerated into rioting, including the destruction of public and private property, road blockades and the looting of stores. The rioting and destruction halted the collection of tolls in December.
According to the government, at least 15 tolls are still not being charged to vehicles travelling on the roads operated by Revimo and by the South African company Trans African Concessions (TRAC), which operates the Maputo-South Africa motorway. TRAC also failed to resume collection of tolls last January, since drivers were still refusing to pay the tolls, despite a heavy police presence.
In Maputo City and Gaza alone, 12 Revimo toll gates were damaged and remain inoperable “and the situation will affect more than 300 workers, whose contracts will be suspended from March”, said the company.
“The decision will directly affect the workers at the toll booths which are inoperable. This is the result of the vulnerable financial situation that the institution faces due to the destruction of toll booths and the non-collection of fees. Although the suspension of contracts is temporary, no date has been set for the employees to return to their jobs. In the meantime, those affected will be called back gradually, as soon as the conditions are right”, Revimo says.
According to the company, there is no date set for the start of reconstruction work on the toll gates.
