Mozambique: Sculpture by Mapfara and painting by Phambi on display at the Leite Couto Foundation

The two artists Zeca Mahumane from Mozambique and Erik Schurmann from Denmark have made a joined exposition of abstract art with the title “Reflections in Turbulent Times” at the Instituto Guimarães Rosa in Av 25 de Setembro Maputo.
The exposition is open for the public Monday to Friday from 10h to 18h and will continue until the 28th of March .
With pictures and texts, the exposition focuses on some of the challenges not only Mozambique but the whole World are facing today.
The abstract paintings are very colorful, lively, expressive, and transmit messages. The two artists are using some similar color scales, which brings happiness and joy. Many have text that inspire the visitor to reflect on life, life values, our world, and the future.
The exposition is free and all are welcome.
Erik Schurmann is an educated teacher and has been teaching at various educational institutions for 19 years in Denmark. Since 1997 he has been working in Mozambique, 10 years training primary school teachers in northern Mozambique and the last 17 years with developing of agricultural projects for small-scale farmers on how to use sustainable and environmentally friendly methods in their production and improve their livelihood and income.
10 Years ago he started to paint with inspiration from the everyday life in Mozambique, people, wildlife and nature. Two years ago he participated in an abstract painting course, which since has inspired many of his paintings.
Zeca Mahumane was born in Maputo on October 1, 1976. He attended the School of Visual Arts, where his teachers were Gemuce, B.C. Mukessuane, Victor Sousa, H. Calisto, Cejuma, Constantino John Harrison, Victor Sala, among others. He participated in a study on natural dyes in Maputo (UNESCO) and completed the secondary course in Textiles at ENAV in 1999.
Between 2001 and 2002, he was part of the experimentation of the new basic curriculum of Education in Balama, Cabo Delgado, in the areas of EVT and crafts. He worked at the College for Training Future Teachers Bilibiza, Cabo Delgado in 2004 and 2006, teaching Visual Education and Crafts.
Zeca has a solid track record in exhibitions and workshops in Mozambique. In 2000, he won the 2nd prize for painting in the Descobertas competition. He was a volunteer at the Flori Center in Romão, Maputo. He participated in several exhibitions, such as the mini group exhibitions “Quebrar Fronteiras” with Chichongue, CEB 2005, and “Convite ao Convívio”. His solo exhibitions include “Tu e Eu”, at the Sundown Guest House in Maputo, in 2006, and “Peregrino das Cores”, in 2019, at the Núcleo de Arte.
In 2018, he participated in the mini group exhibition “Convite ao Convívio” with Gonza, also at the Núcleo de Arte, as well as an auction in honor of Bento C. Mukesuane, CEB, 1999.
He is an active member of the Núcleo de Arte and had an exhibition at Café Ritual, in Polana, in 2024.
His works are present in public and private collections, both in Mozambique and abroad. In addition to his artistic practice, Zeca is also dedicated to teaching painting and currently lives and works in Maputo.
