Individuals in Bilene municipality, Gaza province, have invaded and occupied 100 hectares of private property. The local government condemns the situation and calls on residents not to ignore the law.
On Tuesday, more than 300 people demonstrated in front of Bilene city hall, demanding that the city provide them with 100 hectares of land for a market. According to residents, the location in question had been abandoned for some years and is currently used to dump garbage.
Under pressure, the city council agreed to meet the protesters. But leaving the meeting around two hours later, the local mayor ruled out the possibility of handing over the space, claiming that it belongs to a South African company. After this, the atmosphere became tense in the village, with the population creating a disturbance that almost paralyzed the tourist area and, in defiance of city hall, invading the site to claim it.
The municipal village of Bilene has been experiencing situations of this type for about three days now.
Mayor Mufundisse Chilengue has repudiated the residents’ stance and demanded respect for the law.
On Tuesday, another group invaded tourist establishments to use swimming pools. Police had to intervene to restore order.
