The Mozambican government confirmed yesterday the occurrence of “sporadic attacks” by rebel groups in the province of Cabo Delgado, whilst giving assurances that the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) remain on the ground to guarantee the safety of the population.
“Sporadic attacks are occurring, but the indication we have is that the Defence and Security Forces [FDS] are doing their job properly and, of course, what is happening is that [the alleged terrorists] divide into groups, create other mechanisms to scare and terrorize the population,” Council of Ministers spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa told journalists in reply to questions about the current situation in Cabo Delgado province, in the north of the country.
Since October 2017, the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion, with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist Islamic State group.
“The only news that has worried us in the last two weeks was in the district of Quissanga, where there was some strange activity that almost jeopardized and paralyzed assistance to people who have been receiving support from the government and organizations,” Impissa said. The stoppage occurred “to avoid other scenarios and that the logistics prepared for the population would then be diverted to support the terrorists”.
A group of alleged armed terrorists looted property on Friday in the village of Mandela, Muidumbe district, local sources told Lusa. Food products such as corn, dried cassava and beans were looted from unoccupied houses in broad daylight, and was discovered by members of the Local Force, who are patrolling the region. “They looted a bit of everything from residents’ homes, as no-one is there,” a source from the Local Force reported from Mueda.
The last major attack took place in May, 2024, in the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred rebels looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and the Rwandan military, which is providing support to the FDS in the region.
