Rehabilitation work on Julius Nyerere Avenue, between the Chapa da Igreja and Xinkanhanine bus stops, in the Hulene “B” neighbourhood, Maputo, will resume next Monday.
Notice was given by the councillor for Infrastructure at the Maputo Municipal Council, João Munguambe, after the road was blocked by motorists last Monday in protest against the advanced state of degradation of the road.
Rehabilitation would consist of filling in the potholes and laying asphalt, he said. “The rehabilitation work will resume on Monday, as it involves a new mobilisation of resources and coordination with the contractor. We have already reached an understanding to ensure the continuity of the work,” Munguambe said.
Users expect the work to be carried out quickly, in order to avoid congestion and damage to
vehicles.
“The state of the road is deplorable – it damages cars and increases maintenance costs.
That’s why we ask that you meet the deadlines, because we have a hard time getting around,” said Lucas Carvalho, a Hulene resident for 20 years.
Roberto António, a semi-public passenger transport operator, lamented the daily losses
caused by damage to vehicles. “We spend a lot on shock absorbers and tires because of the potholes. The workshops have become our second home,” he said.
