The increase in assaults, robberies, thefts, homicides and other types of crime has led the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) to revitalize community policing, a strategy that prioritizes partnership between the community and the authorities in matters of
security.
In this context, Cláudio Langa, head of the Community Policing Department at the PRM General Command, held a meeting with residents of the Infulene ‘A’ neighbourhood in Matola over the weekend, with a view to outlining better ways to end the crime wave terrorizing residents.
According to Langa, ongoing dialogue with communities is essential to guaranteeing public order and security, which is why he is calling for greater collaboration.
“We have to be united and work in harmony. The PRM cannot work without the community and the community will only have peace of mind if it collaborates with the police. This partnership will result in the safety of all of us,” he said.
Langa took the opportunity to ask for an end to the ongoing persecution of PRM officers, especially in connection with demonstrations against the election results and the rising cost of living. He explained that such acts have resulted in around twenty officers being killed and more than 100 subunits being destroyed.
“When we are assaulted, we call on two entities: God and the police. But it is this very police that we are persecuting. We have to stop this. Let us try to be more united and firm in order to guarantee the safety of all,” he added.
He mentioned that the destruction of police units throughout the country had created new challenges for the PRM, such as the shortage of personnel and precarious working conditions.
“The PRM is on the ground working under the conditions possible and is doing everything it can to ensure that no neighbourhood is left without protection,” Langa said, who, as a representative of the International Police Association, also provided school supplies to the children of Infulene ‘A’.
