"Major magnitude" derailment interrupts traffic on central Mozambique rail line

The National Road Administration (ANE) is carrying out a technical assessment of the
condition of Mozambique's metal bridges countrywide. Many of these structures are under
pressure due to the excess load of trucks traveling along national and regional corridors.
According to the ANE, excess load, particularly of trucks transporting logs, is one of the
causes of accidents on bridges, particularly in the centre and north of the country.
“This represents a major constraint, because it delays investments in the roads that are
priorities, since the sector always has to replace metal bridges,” Rubina Noormohamed,
director of Central Maintenance and Road Safety Services at the ANE, acknowledged in an
interview with 'Notícias'.
He highlighted that, in addition to the amounts involved in replacing such infrastructure,
estimated at about 200 million meticais per 80 metres of bridge, incidents sometimes cause
the interruption of road traffic, leaving towns and cities cut off.
In this context, Noormohamed called on drivers to respect maximum load limits when crossing bridges, in order to safeguard them and ensure transitability between different
parts of Mozambique.
Additionally, during the current rainy season, eight bridges, four drifts and six pontoons
have been damaged by flooding, compromising road traffic.
Furthermore, most of Mozambique's main road transport corridors are subjected to excess
cargo load weights, mainly carried by unprofessional hauliers, which reduces the working
life of the asphalt.
The provinces of Maputo, Nampula and Cabo Delgado suffer the most from excessive loading, reducing the useful life of the pavement by around 40%, with a considerable
corresponding increase in maintenance costs.
