FC Porto said goodbye on Saturday to Pinto da Costa, who led the ‘blue and white’ club for 42 years, as the ‘president of presidents’, in a post on social media.
‘An eternal inspiration. An immortal legacy. Until always president of presidents,’ reads the message from the Porto club, captioning a photograph of Pinto da Costa, with his birth and death dates.
Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, former president of FC Porto, where he established himself as the most successful and longest-serving manager in world football between 1982 and 2024, died on Saturday aged 87 from a long illness, a source close to his family confirmed to Lusa today
Pinto da Costa had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2021 and his condition worsened in recent weeks, less than a year after his defeat by André Villas-Boas, former coach of the Portista football team and current 34th president of the club, in the most participated elections in ‘blue and white’ history, on 27 April.
Sworn in for the first time on 23 April 1982, six days after being elected unopposed as Américo de Sá’s successor, the former leader held office for 42 years and 15 consecutive terms, leading FC Porto to 2,591 titles in 21 sports – 69 of which were in men’s senior football, including seven internationals.
