The Police of the Republic of Mozambique in Sofala province have arrested 19 of the 220 inmates freed by protesters in the town of Gorongosa. The authorities also say that they arrested seven protesters.
On Mozambican Heroes Day, February 3, some residents of the town of Gorongosa, mostly miners and motorcycle taxi drivers, staged a demonstration that resulted in gastroenteritis, the destruction of public property and the release of 220 inmates who were being held in the cells of the district police command.
Seven days later, the authorities indicate that 19 of the 220 inmates illegally released have been recaptured, plus seven protesters, arrested for incitement to violence and the destruction of public property.
The PRM says the situation in the town of Gorongosa is now under control.
“From the work carried out, 19 inmates were recaptured and seven protesters were arrested for having incited these violent demonstrations,” PRM spokesperson Dércio Chacate said.
Chacate also explained that the police’s work includes urging the population to denounce anyone promoting such acts, along with recapturing more inmates who were illegally released.
“Naturally, the work involves talking to the population. This is our action. On the other hand, we will continue working to recapture the other individuals who were in prison,” Chacate said.
Also in the review of activity, the PRM presented an individual accused of illegal possession of a weapon. The suspect belongs to a private security company, from which he is said to have stolen a weapon.
“He used the weapon to commit criminal acts that amounted to theft. Following the police work, he was questioned and detained,” Chacate explained. The detainee however denied any involvement in crime and said only that he was found on the street after allegedly being beaten up by some locals.
