Mozambique on Monday received “guarantees” from international institutions, such as the IMF, World Bank and UN, of financial aid for development projects in agriculture, infrastructure, health, education and governance, according to an official statement.
The statement says that the guarantees were given to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela Lucas, by country representatives of the United Nations (UN), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Finance Corporation, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, following a joint meeting between their representatives and the minister in Maputo.
“We reiterate the UN’s willingness to continue supporting Mozambique on its journey towards sustainable development (…) with a special focus on the populations most affected by the conflict in the north and by natural disasters, as well as the most vulnerable women and children,” said the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Mozambique, Catharine Sozi, quoted in the statement.
On December 17, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs made US$4 million (€3.8 million) available to assist victims of Cyclone Chido in Mozambique, which killed at least 120 people, according to the latest government update.
“The emergency aid coordinator has allocated four million dollars to Mozambique to support the rapid humanitarian response,” reads a document from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) updating data on the impact of Cyclone Chido in Mozambique.
The World Bank has more than 40 projects in operation in the country, worth more than US$7 billion (more than €6.6 billion), under the partnership with the country, focused on the pillars of sustainable, inclusive and resilient growth, and strengthening human capital, particularly in the areas of education, health and social protection.
