President Daniel Chapo admitted today that Mozambique faces “complex challenges”, demanding that the executive be “creative” in the face of a people “crying out for answers”.
“Our country faces complex challenges that require not only courage from us, but also creativity, resilience and an unwavering focus on the mission of serving the Mozambican people. The people are crying out for answers,” declared Daniel Chapo.
The head of state was speaking during the inauguration ceremony of new advisors and the Minister of the Presidency for Parliamentary, Local Government and Provincial Assemblies Affairs, at the Presidency in Maputo.
For Chapo, despite the “complex challenges”, this is a time of “renewal” and “great responsibility” for the Mozambican executive.
“This is a time for renewal, commitment and, above all, concrete action for the benefit of the Mozambican people. Therefore, it is a time of great responsibility,” he said.
The reconstruction of the social, economic and political fabric are highlighted by the Mozambican president as priorities, as well as achieving the country’s “economic independence.”
“We must therefore find innovative ways to overcome economic difficulties, strengthen our institutions and renew the hope of Mozambicans,” he added.
Mozambique has been experiencing a climate of social unrest since October of last year, with demonstrations and strikes initially called by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who rejects the election results of October 9.
Protests, now on a smaller scale, are still taking place in different parts of the country and, in addition to contesting the election results, are complaining about the rising cost of living and other social problems.
Since October, at least 327 people have died, including around two dozen minors, and around 750 have been shot during the protests, according to the electoral platform Decide, a non-governmental organization that monitors the electoral processes.
Among those sworn in today are former President of the Assembly of the Republic Eduardo Mulémbwè, who was appointed to the position of Minister in the Presidency for Parliamentary, Local and Provincial Assemblies Affairs, and former Minister of Transport and Communications Mateus Magala, who takes on the role of Advisor for Economic and Development Affairs, in addition to former Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) Beatriz Buchiili, who is the new Advisor for Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
Daniel Chapo was sworn in on January 15 2025 as the fifth President of Mozambique.
