Acknowledging the impact of the suspension of support from the United States of America (USA) for various health programs, the Mozambican government guarantees that it has already “initiated a dialogue” with US representatives with a view to reversing or mitigating the effect of the cut.
“The decision taken by the United States of America (…) has an impact on Mozambique, as this funding is crucial for the maintenance of strategic and priority programs” in the areas of “tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, family planning and strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain, among others,” said government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa.
According to Impissa, the sudden withdrawal of support “compromises, as one can imagine, in some way, the efficiency of the implementation” of health programs and the impact will also be reflected in the availability of human resources in the sector.
Inocêncio Impissa recalled that Mozambique has a ratio of 18.5 health professionals per 10,000 inhabitants, as against a World Health Organization recommended ratio of 45.
“We are very far” from this target. Therefore, “with this suspension” determined by the US, it will be “a huge challenge to achieve this target,” Impissa said.
The suspension of US financial support to Mozambique and other African countries in the health area will have implications for the acquisition and supply of essential medicines to health units, such as for HIV/AIDS and family planning, Impissa remarked.
To mitigate the situation, “the government has initiated a dialogue with the United States representation” to reverse the suspension.
The executive guarantees that it is studying other ways to mitigate the situation, and calls on the population to remain calm.
