Rail traffic on the Ressano Garcia line in Maputo province is at a standstill following the derailment of a train in the Chinculo area on Sunday afternoon.
The information was shared by the Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo province, which explained that the freight train was heading from Ressano Garcia to Maputo, with 50 chrome-ore wagons, six of which derailed, two overturning completely.
The accident did not cause any human casualties, but resulted in the destruction of concrete sleepers, to an extent yet to be assessed, with the wagons blocking the line.
Notícias has learned that a police team was mobilized after the incident to maintain security, while waiting for technicians to arrive to investigate the causes of the accident.
Yesterday, work was underway to restore the line, and the railway is expected to reopen today.
The accident was confirmed by a source from the company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM).
The Ressano Garcia line is vital to the development of Mozambique and South Africa, providing a connection with the Republic of South Africa, which is very important for the country’s foreign trade.
The 88-km line from the Port of Maputo to Ressano Garcia has 11 stations and two stops, and permits 12 trains a day in each direction.
