Police agents in Maputo have shot two men dead on Saturday, September 10, on separate incidents.
The first case occurred around 4.00 a.m. in the Ferroviário neighbourhood. The victim, Jose Langa, was accused of stealing a wallet.
His bereaved mother, Celeste Mandlate, says that her son had left home on the night of Friday “to have fun”.
“They came to tell me that my son had been shot dead,” she said, with tears streaming down her face.
The deceased’s aunt said that a girl complaining about a missing purse had caused Langa’s death by goading a PRM agent into shooting him.
“He [Langa] was standing next to a car. The car’s owner told him he wanted a purse that had gone missing back, and he [Langa] said he knew nothing about it. Then the police officer became involved and first shot at the ground to scare him, but he insisted he was innocent. Then the police officer also insisted and argued until he shot him in the legs and the victim fell to the ground. Then the girl whose purse had been stolen said ‘Finish him off’, and the policeman shot him dead.”
The PRM says that the policeman involved was on the run, although the police had managed to seize the murder weapon.
“The murder weapon was later seized [from the policeman’s son]. The offender is now on the run,” PRM spokesman in Maputo Orlando Mudumane told the press.
In the second incident, a different officer shot and killed another individual in the 25 de Junho neighbourhood, but Mudumane said the shooting was accidental and happened in the course of an unrelated police mission.
“The PRM in Maputo has created a commission of inquiry to clarify the circumstances of the incident,” Mudumane said.
