A review of the Highway Code currently underway includes the possibility of reducing speed limits on national roads as a way of mitigating road accident numbers.
Approval of the revised Highway Code is expected this year. The revised code may also toughen penalties for offenders, introduce new sanctioning measures and modernise the mechanisms for monitoring driving in Mozambique.
The information was shared with ‘Notícias’ by a source linked to the process, who explained that the reform would focus on reducing speed limits within cities and towns, similar to what has happened elsewhere on the African continent and around the world.
“The new Highway Code may also provide for additional offences that may result in the seizure of the driver’s licence or vehicle registration document, as well as an increase in fines already applied under the instrument currently in force,” said the source.
In addition to the legal measures, the sector is focused on long-term projects aimed at improving safety on Mozambican roads. One of these projects is being financed by an international partner and aims to build road infrastructure to the value of US$7 million in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region.
This initiative includes the installation of surveillance cameras and speed control systems in places considered ‘black spots’, such as the EN1 in front of the Faculty of Engineering of Eduardo Mondlane University.
“These interventions aim to reduce the number of accidents in critical areas, where accidents have been particularly high,” stressed the source.
In addition, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights are being installed, while pedestrian bridges are being built to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially near schools.
