Colleagues, friends, family and former students gathered on the morning of this Wednesday (22-01) at Eduardo Mondlane University Cultural Centre in Maputo to bid a final farewell to Professor Salomão Munguambe, the longest-serving lecturer at the UEM Faculty of Economics, who passed away on 17 January at the age of 88.
On the occasion, the Minister of Finance, Carla Louveira, stated that Salomão Munguambe was a dedicated public servant and a citizen who left an indelible mark on the country’s economic and fiscal history, having held the position of Minister of Finance and External Commerce from 29 June 1975 to 22 April 1978, a position which was crucial for Mozambique, as the country faced significant challenges in building its economy after national independence.
Minister of Finance Carla Louveira praised the commitment and dedication of Salomão Munguambe in formulating policies to build the country’s economy after independence. He was a role model in competence and ethics in the Public Service, Carla Louveira said.
The Rector of UEM, Manuel Guilherme Júnior, noted in his address that Salomão Munguambe was the longest-serving professor at the Faculty of Economics of the UEM, having started his duties in 1972. After independence, he was key to ensuring that UEM was unified, together with professors from friendly countries, coordinating his governance activities with academic activities.
Professor Munguambe always knew how to combine theory with practice, factors that consolidated his role in promoting relevant teaching that was adapted to the reality of the country, said Manuel Guilherme Júnior.
The Rector recalled how, in July 1973, Munguambe was promoted to the category of First-Echelon Assistant Professor in the UEM teaching faculty. In 1996, in recognition of his contribution and achievements in the development of UEM, he was awarded a decoration and, in April 1999, was promoted to Assistant Professor in the Third Echelon category, a role he held until his retirement in 2008. “However, due to his passion for teaching and science, Professor Munguambe continued to collaborate with the institution until 2012,” he said.
In 2022, the Faculty of Economics paid tribute to Salomao Munguambe on the occasion of his 85th birthday, signalling the recognition for the decades of dedication and work in training and improving the quality of teaching at the academic unit, and transmitting academic and citizenship values.
The Rector pledged that, as an institution, the UEM was committed to continuing his legacy, which is manifested not only in knowledge, but also in the presence of highly qualified teachers and managers at the institution, the fruit of his work.
Representing the family, his son, Edgar Munguambe, recalled a father and a man who taught them the value of simplicity, integrity, family and service with dedication, without ignoring the importance of fun and the lightness of life. However, very early on, they realized that their father was very busy, combining sports activities at the Military Club, classes at the Faculty of Economics and work at the Ministry of Finance, including travel.
“Despite this, you were never an absent father, always keeping us busy with recreational activities at the Natural History Museum, the Maputo Fair, the Theatre and the beach,: he said.
Former students of Salomão Munguambe and fellow teachers at the Faculty of Economics also witnessed the legacy of a man who helped, with his knowledge, to build the faculty.
The wake was attended by prominent figures from the political and academic spheres, including the former President of the Republic of Mozambique, Joaquim Chhissano, the former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Adriano Maleiane, and the former President of the Municipal Council of the City of Maputo, Eneas Comiche.
Among other roles, Salomão Munguambe was Secretary of Finance in the Transitional Government between 1974 and 1975, Minister of Finance and Commerce from 1975 to 1978, Minister of Foreign Trade from 1978 to 1988, and from 1977 to 1994, he was a member of the People’s Assembly.
After the wake, which was largely dominated by a religious ceremony, the funeral procession headed to the Lhanguene Cemetery for the burial.
