Another Mozambican citizen was kidnapped in Maputo on Saturday, but was inexplicably immediately released.
The incident occurred less than three days after the inauguration of the new President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and just a few hours after the inauguration of the new Minister of the Interior, Paulo Chachine.
The kidnapping took place on Saturday afternoon (January 18) on Avenida Joaquim Chissano, on the corner of Milagre Mabote.
The group of four kidnappers were carrying AKM-type weapons and travelling in a white Toyota Alphard 2004 vehicle.
The victim was Ibraimo Momade, but he was released a few minutes later, presumably, it is rumoured, because he was not the intended target.
Nevertheless, the episode has raised tensions among businesspeople and Mozambican society in general. There were expectations that, with the formation of a new government, this type of crime would be overcome.
In fact, putting an end to kidnappings was one of the commitments made by the nation’s new supreme magistrate in his inaugural speech.
“The kidnappings that rob our families of their peace, often with the complicity of those who should be protecting us, are an outrage that we will not tolerate. We will confront organized crime and ensure that security is once again a reality for all Mozambicans,” said newly-inaugurated President Chapo. on Wednesday.
