Journalist and human rights defender Arlindo Chissale, a notable activist in recent years on behalf of Renamo and, more recently, Podemos, has been incommunicado for seven days. Neither his family, friends nor acquaintances have had any contact with him since Tuesday of last week.
Severina Chissale, Arlindo’s sister, went public to put an end to speculation about her brother’s disappearance, after reports emerged on social media, expressing deep concern on her Facebook page, and asking that, if he had been killed, his body be handed over.
“My brother has been missing since Tuesday. This has never happened. We, as a family, are prepared for the worst. If anyone has seen him, even if he is dead… we earnestly ask for the body to be handed over. Come home, brother Arlindo Chissale,” she wrote.
In her comments, Severina Chissale wrote that the family did not want speculation, merely asking that, if Chissale had been killed, his body should be handed over for burial.
“As a family, we would appreciate it if there were no speculation about who took him, whether it was so-and-so or so-and-so… We were not born with a silver spoon in our mouths, we trust only in God. If he is dead, let them hand over his body to us, we will be grateful and keep quiet,” the note reads.
In a public statement, concerned wife of Arlindo Chissale said her husband had many political enemies, and reported that on the 7th, the day he went missing, Chissale had said that he was traveling from Pemba to his home in Nacala-Porto, but he had not arrived by the 8th.
Arlindo Chissale’s last public appearance was on 2 January, alongside Singano Assane, coordinator of Podemos and supporter of Venancio Mondlane n Cabo Delgado. condemning the barbaric murder of the Podemos’s mobilization leader in Montepuez district.
Carta de Moçambique reports that Chissale frequently travelled to Cabo Delgado on behalf of Podemos and, before that, of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD).
Carta also mentions that, on the day that Chissale was supposedly traveling to Nacala-Porto, there were traffic problems after locals from Intutupue blocked the road, following the shooting of an individual, allegedly by members of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR).
Carta has learned that two other prominent Podemos members are missing in equally mysterious circumstances. One of them is from the town of Chiúre and the other from the district of Namuno, the latter allegedly captured last week while travelling in a “chapa-cem” from Montepuez to Pemba.
