Podemos went to parliament in Maputo city for the first time today, with its 39 members elected to take on the role of deputy.
At the entrance to the National Assembly, Albino Forquilha, the president of PODEMOS, the second most voted-for party in the October 9 elections, spoke of inclusion, a new parliamentary stance, and efforts to create a new parliamentary dynamic, with a new culture of representation of the Mozambican people.
Regarding the decision to swear in the Podemos deputies, Albino Forquilha argued that the parties were sovereign.
“We understand that we should take office. We fought not to recognize the results, with large national protests, but the results were validated and we abided by the constitutional order. That is why we chose to be here. If my party did not take office here today, it would never take office,” Forquilha said.
In Forquilha’s opinion, it makes no sense not to take office on the day set for that purpose, and then assume those responsibilities at a later point in time. But since the parties are sovereign, Forquilha stressed, the other opposition parties, Renamo and MDM, have this freedom.
Albino Forquilha ended the session of responses to journalists by appealing to the deputies to respond to what the people have asked them to do.
