The Mozambican population grows every year. The 2017 population census counted 27 million Mozambicans, of whom 13.3 million were men and 14.5 million were women. Of the total, 33.4% lived in cities and 66.6% (the majority) in rural areas.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), by the end of 2025, there will be 34 million Mozambicans. Of these, just over 16.5 million will be men and 17.5 million women, a difference of one million people.
Projections from the INE also indicate that, of the 34 million Mozambicans, 11.9 million will live in urban areas and almost double this number, 22 million, will live in rural areas.
Statistical authority figures project that, by the end of this year, 14 million Mozambicans will be between 0 and 14 years of age, 16 million between 15 and 49 years of age and 18 million between 15 and 59 years of age.
The INE estimates population growth rate at 2.5%, life expectancy at birth is 56.5 years, the crude mortality rate is 11.5%, the crude birth rate (per thousand people) is 36.5 people, the infant mortality rate (per thousand) is 62.8 children. The fertility rate (children per woman) is 4.8.
