The low pressure atmospheric system that formed on Tuesday northeast of Madagascar may develop into a tropical cyclone, potentially affecting the Mozambican coast from Sunday onwards, Notícias reports today.
According to the Central Meteorological Forecasting Services of the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), Tropical Storm Dikeledi could affect the weather in the provinces of Nampula, Zambézia and Sofala, with heavy to very strong rain and winds accompanied by severe thunderstorms.
Meteorologist Acácio Tembe, from INAM, told Notícias that the system has currently evolved into a tropical depression and is expected to become a tropical storm in the coming hours, reaching cyclone status near eastern Madagascar on Saturday.
Tembe said that INAM will continue to monitor and update the information in the coming days, at which point it would be possible to indicate the point of entry into the country.
INAM urges the population to continue to pay attention to weather warnings and to take precautionary and safety measures.
Tembe said that heavy rain is expected in the coming hours, with around 50 millimetres in 24 hours, reaching more than 75 millimetres in some parts of the country. Rainfall would be felt throughout the country for a short period of time, with a probability of it easing, he said.
Maputo, Gaza and part of Inhambane province would likely be the most affected.
Dikeledi will be accompanied by severe thunderstorms and winds with gusts of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Projections also indicate a significant drop in temperature, with maximums of between 26 and 30 degrees in all provinces.
