The Supreme Court has issued a press release distancing itself from statements made by the institution’s Director of Documentation, Judicial Editing and Library, Denise Catarina, who in a video questions the legality of the decision taken by the Constitutional Council to validate and proclaim the 2024 election results, and also the timing of the changes to the country’s electoral legislation.
“The Supreme Court distances itself from the statements made by Mrs Denise Catarina. Appropriate measures will be taken to preserve the institution’s image. The Supreme Court reaffirms its commitment to respecting the decisions of other sovereign bodies,” reads the document issued on Tuesday and signed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Adelino Muchanga.
The institution understands that, in these videos, Denise Catarina publicly assumes her support for the political party and presidential candidate she considers to be the winners of the elections.
“These statements do not reflect the position of the Supreme Court, which, as a sovereign body, bases its actions on the principles of independence and impartiality. The Supreme Court respects the constitutional mandates of other State bodies, such as the Assembly of the Republic and the Constitutional Council,” the note reads.
It adds that magistrates, court officials and assistants to court officials are bound by the duty not to make statements of a political or partisan nature or to issue opinions on the decisions of judicial bodies.
