After many days without work due to the demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane, and still to see how the following “phases” affect the working days of Mozambicans, the year 2025 includes eight mandatory national holidays and three public holidays, four of which give rise to long weekends.
The year began on a Wednesday, allowing rest until January 5th. The day of Daniel Chapo’s inauguration as the fifth President of Mozambique should be a public holiday.
The first long weekend is at the beginning of February – Heroes’ Day is celebrated on a Monday.
After a March without any rest days, April brings two long weekends. Mozambican Women’s Day falls on a Monday and Good Friday falls on the 18th. The latter is not an official holiday, but the government usually decrees a day off.
In May, Workers’ Day is celebrated on a Thursday, and in June, the 50th anniversary of National Independence will be celebrated on a Wednesday.
July and August follow without holidays or days off until the first week of September, which provides a long weekend. Lusaka Accords Day falls on a Sunday, moving the holiday to Monday, and there is also the Armed Forces Day holiday on the last Thursday of the month.
Peace Day will be a “wasted holiday” for long weekend purposes, as it is celebrated on Saturday, October 4.
November will have no national holidays in Mozambique which will have its last public holiday of 2025 on Thursday, December 25, preceded by a day off on December 24, and the year ends on a Wednesday.
