Preparations are accelerating towards the inauguration of the 250 deputies elected for the 10th Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic, in a ceremony that will take place in the country’s capital on January 13th, in which the president of this body, the second largest in the Mozambican state, will also be elected.
Two days later, on January 15, the president-elect, Daniel Francisco Chapo, will be sworn in as the fifth President of the Republic of Mozambique.
These are key events in the reorganization of the Mozambican state, which will unveil a new parliamentary composition, a new head of state and give way to a new executive.
President Filipe Nyusi, now in office, is due to dismiss the entire government during the week that begins today, opening up space for some of its members to be sworn in as deputies in the new legislature or take over other functions.
The Mozambican parliament inaugurates the 10th Legislature on January 13 with the inauguration of the 250 deputies elected in the 7th general elections held on October 9.
Four political parties secured seats in the Assembly of the Republic, namely Frelimo (with 171 seats), Podemos (43), Renamo (28) and the MDM (8).
Meanwhile, Frelimo has seen its number of deputies in the legislature fall from 184 to 171, and Renamo from 60 seats to 28, the latter losing its status as the second largest political force and its president his status as leader of the opposition.
Deputies from the three parties who are left out
A significant number of the deputies from Frelimo, Renamo and MDM were not re-elected, leaving their seats for new political actors, some of whom are young.
Among the examples, we have deputies such as António Muchanga (Renamo) in Maputo province, and Eduardo Mulémbwe (Frelimo) in Cabo Delgado, among other well-known names.
In the meantime, others will remain in parliament, such as Sérgio Pantie, Verónica Macamo, Margarida Talapa, Eduardo Nihia, Lucília Hama and Damião José from Frelimo; and Angelina Enoque, Viana Magalhães, Lúcia Afate, Gania Mussagy, Arnaldo Chalaua, Saimone Macuiana, Ivone Soares and Elisa Silvestre from Renamo.
