Approximately 180 tonnes of marine waste were removed last year at various locations across the country by the Mozambican Recycling Association (AMOR) as part of efforts to conserve ecosystems.
The cleanup campaigns involved coastal communities, which primarily collected fishing nets, footwear, clothing, plastics, metals, and glass.
According to Deonísio Ussaca, AMOR’s manager in Maputo Province, the waste removed by the communities was purchased by the organisation through the Kolekt app, a digital platform designed to monitor waste flows and facilitate its management and recycling.
These activities are part of the Coastal Waste Resilience in Mozambique (RRCM) initiative, supported financially by the UK government in collaboration with the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA).
In addition to cleaning up coastal areas, the project aims to increase the income of participating families and promote marine biodiversity conservation. To this end, the cleanup campaigns are always preceded by environmental awareness activities.
This past year, AMOR also trained several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to use the Kolekt app, equipping them with the tools necessary to register and manage waste while fostering effective collaboration in identifying and classifying recyclable materials.
The platform allows users to record the amount of waste collected in various locations, classify it by type, and track the process from collection to final disposal.
In parallel, the organisation provided training to CSOs in areas such as environmental advocacy, organisational and project management, gender, governance, and other related topics.
Deonísio Ussaca stated that the projects implemented in 2024 will continue this year, with reinforced efforts to involve more communities in environmental preservation.
“Our goal is to continue projects that combat marine pollution, increase community income, create more jobs, and fight poverty in the country through the promotion of a circular economy,” he emphasised.
