The Maputo City Council has lost a fleet of six garbage collection vehicles due to violent protests.
According to the mayor of the country’s capital, this situation, coupled with the destruction of waste containers, has reduced the capacity to collect solid waste.
Rasaque Manhique made these remarks on Saturday during a cleanup effort in critical areas of waste accumulation, particularly in the Polana Caniço neighborhood.
“You must understand that we are currently working with private trucks, provided by well-meaning individuals who have offered their support. One company, which provides services in most of our districts, had all its assets and trucks vandalized. You should note that on Monday, the company’s trucks were vandalized—six in total—and this is the situation we are dealing with,” he stated.
The President of the Maputo City Council urged protesters and the general public to allow garbage collection vehicles access to disposal sites.
